Horror movie genre and Hindi movie industry has a very old connection. From Ashol Kumar’s Mahal to the Latest Raaz 2, Bollywood has regularly come up with horror movies for audiences. But these are still limited when compared to comedy or Romance genre that Bollywood now thrives on.
Indian film industry’s Horror genre owes a lot to Ramsay Brothers who single-handedly gave the genre a permanent place in Bollywood. They not only directed a produced a slew of movies since 70s, but also created horror TV serials in the 90s.
Hindi Horror Movie Classics
Here’s a list of Hindi horror movie classics that you must watch.
1. Veerana
A witch is on the lose in the forest. Villagers passing by are attacked and killed often. Some have even seen a beautiful woman transform into a bat and attack passersby. A witch or a vampire? Thakur Mahendra Pratap sing takes on the challenge and decides to kill the witch that is bothering the villagers. But will that be easy. Or will the Witch’s powers be too overwhelming for a mere mortal.

2. Purana Mandir
There is no crime that evil Samri – a tantric – has not perpetrated on innocent citizens of Sultanate of Bijapur. This is how the story from 200 years ago begins. Raja Harimanshing orders that the tantric be decapitated and his head be buried separate from his body to keep the evil in check. But not before the tantric curses the king’s coming generations. The curse is still strong in present day and the Raja’s descendant, Suman must find a solution- or she too will die in child birth.

3. Bandh Darwaza
Neola, a Vampire like demon is hunting villagers in the vicinity of Kali Pahari. He hunts in the night with his gang of tantrics and weaklings who assist him to trap locals. When the local strongman finds out that Neola has tricked his wife and has a daughter from her, he attacks, subdues him, and locks him behind a door.

Now years later that daughter has grown up and stumbles to the Kali Pahari. Here, she gravitates toward Neola and black magic to win the heart of her boyfriend, but is captured by Neola. Will her friends be able to save her from this demon? What tricks must they play to get the demon back into his coffin behind the door, or better, kill him forever.
4. Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche
A rich widower helps a woman and saves her from evil. He brings her back and later gets married. But he soon realises that he was set up. The wife and her maternal uncle find out different ways to extort money from him. Rajvansh is a good man. One day he again sees another woman in trouble and saves her. He nurses her back to health.

But Anjali, the first wife, can’t bear this. She hatches a new plot to get all the money from ill Rajvansh. She gets her ex-boyfriend to impersonate a doctor and invites him to her house. They plot and kill her husband and bury him in the yard. Only he is not entirely dead.
5. Kabrastaan
An extra marital affair of his wife angers the husband to no end. To avenge this treachery, he decides to disfigure his wife. But when he walks in on her with her boyfriend, the tables are turned. Her lover shoots the husband and disfigures him as the acid spills over him. The two lovebirds kill the husband and bury him. Only to unleash an evil that will destroy them and their families.

6. Hotel
Suraj is a rich industrialist who wants to mark his love for Sushma by building a luxurious hotel at the place where they first met. He buys a plot and begins construction of the hotel along with his consultants. He sends his brother Sanjay to check out the preparations before the launch of the hotel. But when he reaches a couple of days later, he finds Sanjay missing. Soon everyone who assisted him in building the hotel starts missing or are found dead. Is there a re killer on lose? or are there some inhuman forces at work here?
7. Tahkhana
As much a treasure hunt as a horror flick, Tahkhana is an entertainer. Thakur Surjeet Singh doesn’t see any promise in his son Durjan, who practices black magic. He bequeaths all his estate to his other son. Unable to accept this, Durjan abducts his brother’s daughters. In the ensuing fight, his brother dies.

Raghuvir’s faithfuls manage to imprison Durjan and rescue one of the daughters. The other goes missing. Years later, the sisters meet and complete the map of dungeon that is supposed to have tons of treasure and go on the hunt for the dungeon, only to unleash an unimaginable force that will consume them, instead.
8. Sannata
A chilling mystery as everyone in Dhanpat Rai’s grand manor is dying. Dhanpat Rai has killed Girdhari Lal for money and banished his daughter to a hostel for education. But Sapna decides to confront her uncle along with her boyfriend and confess her love. When they reach the manor, they find Dhanpat Rai dead. And so begins the terror of an unknown assailant.

9. Purani Haveli
The movie begins with a backstory. A couple accidentally stop at an old mansion on the highway somewhere and decide to rest for the night. Around midnight, they are attacked by a monstrous figure and killed. An old man comes in a bit late, but he manages to subdue and capture the monster.

Years later, Anita inherits the mansion and travels with her friends for a small vacation. Her friends conspire to make Anita like Vikram. They plan and plot to get Anita to marry Vikram. But their plot fails and in the process they unleash the monster captured in the mansion.
10. Dak Bangla
Dak Bangla, usually a government rest house was ubiquitous in old Bollywood movies of all genre. A couple at the rest house are attacked by an unknown force and murdered at the Dak Bangla. Ajay grudgingly accepts the job of a manager at the rest house, ignoring the warnings that it is haunted.
His daughter soon begins to get nightmares in which she is molested and killed by a hideous figure. Upset Sapna and her boyfriend search for the answers and come across an old book that tells a story from past. In their zest to stop the nightmares and confront the evil head on, they unleash something that is out of their control.
